Central Saanich has some of the biggest attractions on Southern Vancouver Island. The Saanich Fair dates back to 1868 when it was a gathering for local farming families to share and celebrate their harvest, homes and gardens. Now it draws people from all across the Island as well as many from off the Island. There are rides, horse shows, animal exhibits, and so much more it is the major event for the Labour Day Weekend. Butchart Gardens brings visitors from all over the world. It is still family owned and operated since it's beginnings in 1904. Visitors walk through 55 acres of the most amazing gardens and displays year round. In 2004 Butchart Gardens was designated a National Historic Site of Canada for it's 100th birthday. Victoria Butterfly Gardens offers a jungle experience with tropical plants galore, up to 70 species of butterflies flying around, free flying tropical birds, flamingo, an iguana, tortoises, poison dart frogs and a pond full of tropical fish.
